I got up to a 3 to 1 k/d ratio in this game’s multiplayer yesterday before I realized I just wasn’t having fun. I then proceeded to slap on a Riot Shield with throwing knives and just try to kill enemies without getting massacred. This was the most fun I had in this game and I was doing horrible. So, what gives? Shouldn’t I have more fun doing well, rather than fucking around?
No, not in Modern Warfare 2.
I was hoping ranking up in this game and unlocking new stuff would increase my enjoyment a little, but it just wasn’t happening. You know, there are always going to be flaws in video games, but these can be fixed in sequels or patches. IW has terrible fucking community support though, so as always, I knew I had to wait for the sequel to COD4 before getting what I wanted from this franchise. What I got was the exact opposite of what made the most sense and what would have been the most fun for a sequel to COD4, though. What I got was an unbalanced, flawed, skill equalized mess of a multiplayer game.
This is actually the most unbalanced COD game yet due to the extreme buff all the assault rifles got. SMG’s are now made pretty obsolete due to machine pistol and shotgun sidearms, as well as the inability to attach heartbeat sensors to the SMG’s. Akimbo 1887 shotties completely destroy all the other shotguns in this game, not to mention really show how terrible the SMG’s truly are, as they are severely outclassed by a sidearm. How could you take steps BACK in balance when this is your 4th time making a Call of Duty game, honestly? Oh, wait, you have to skill equalize this game for the baddies, I remember now. Otherwise you might lose some sales for the sake of better and more fun gameplay, and we can’t have that.
In COD4, the M16 was overpowered and that was really it. In WaW, the SMG’s were overpowered, but there were just 4 of them, and if you kept your distance you could mount a defense. In MW2, 7 out of the 9 assaults are overpowered; they are good at any range, are super easy to use, are all completely swayless when aiming down the sight and they all have low recoil. You could argue the LMG’s are overpowered as well as they carry these same traits, except they lack in mobility and have a bit more kick to them. But hell, every weapon is so good and easy to use in close/medium range, it simply becomes a connection battle in most one on one scenarios anyway. Unless you’re using an SMG, in which case, you better hope you shoot first and have the better connection.
MW2 seems to have suffered the same fate Gears of War 2 suffered; being way too overhyped and then being a huge letdown. I can count the amount of good things about this game’s multiplayer on one hand, and I can’t even begin to count the amount of flaws and problems on all of my fingers and toes combined.
Just off the top of my head; I can’t play in a party with more than 1 friend or someone gets kicked out every time we join a match. This has happened every single time I have tried to play with a group of people, and we all have open NATs, so the matchmaking is effectively broken in that regard. Someone getting a 4 kill streak (3 with Hardline) can randomly get stuff like Chopper Gunner and AC-130 which is random and dumb; randomness always makes for terrible gameplay in a shooter. Good scores in this game aren’t about out gunning the enemy team, they are about building a single streak. This causes a lot of problems.
For instance, lets say a guy who gets 20 kills with his physical GUN by shooting enemies (he is unlucky and his kill streak rewards before that are shot down or miss or something), but say, dies twice at a 10 kill streak before getting his 11 kill streak reward, finishes the game at 20 and 2. Fair enough, he did well and got a great ratio, but didn’t get any reward for it at all because of bad luck and everything being based on a streak. Now, let’s say there’s a guy who is 7 and 5 before he starts doing remotely well. He gets a 5 kill streak after dying his fifth time, gets a predator missile and luckily, the enemies were out in the open and he kills 3 of them with the missile. He then calls in a Harrier strike which then luckily gets him 3 more kills, and then he gets his chopper gunner at an 11 kill streak, which nets him about 20 kills as he spawn rapes the enemy team with an overpowered kill streak reward. And this is all without doing a single thing after he gets that predator missile. The guy who actually did MORE work and got the better k/d WITHOUT streak rewards doesn’t get shit because of bad luck, while the guy who was 12 and 5 can get lucky and go on to finish the game at 38-5. Its mostly luck whether or not your killstreak can build itself up enabling you to get your final big streak reward which is just stupid. There is just too much emphasis on a single one time streak and not how well you do overall or k/d wise.
With building an effective streak comes an extremely careful and campy style of play, which is quite frankly boring. The maps have all kinds of little obscure balconies and rooftops which promotes a boring/frustrating campy style of gameplay even more so. Deep Impact is no longer a perk, but an attachment that takes a long time to unlock for each weapon, further promoting window/rooftop camping. Being aggressive with a close quarters weapon will get you reverse spawn killed by some idiot with painkiller on, as the spawn system is still a massive problem in this game.
EDIT 8-28-10 : Some complaints at this point in the article were just new game connections jitters so I deleted them. I still stand by this next statement however: Games where you die super quickly and super easily NEED dedicated servers and not the horrible host system that is employed on both PC and consoles now, otherwise 1 on 1 face offs become nothing more than connection battles.
There’s no counter to perks like Stopping Power and Cold Blooded. Xbox Live Party Chat is disabled in most playlists for no other reason than to force you to communicate with strangers if you play. Hit detection is still an issue with snipers, and other weapons for that matter. Spawning is still a major issue. Bullets coming from the top of your head and not your gun is still an issue. Painkiller (giving a player double health after dying 3 times in a row) overly rewards people for dying. I can’t search games by good connection like I could in WaW (Aussies really fucking need this feature) and there’s still no map preferencer, so I’m forced to play IW’s terrible maps. Host migration DOESN’T work the majority of the time. When the host leaves during an airstrike or predator missle drop, it glitches you out of it. I could go on and on. The game took 1 step forward, 20 steps back in my opinion. Nothing was fixed except grenade spam and many, many more problems and flaws were added.
In conclusion, the game is just so flawed and skill equalized its not fun, whether I’m the one killing or I’m the one dying. And honestly, I feel deeply for those of you who spent $60 on this game and am disappointed like I am. Back to COD4 and WaW I guess, until Bad Company 2 comes out at least.
EDIT: I have been informed that the developers for MW2 have k/d ratios below 1. I think the best k/d any of the devs have is actually .74 or something. That explains a lot.
Ye BT its all thanks to you I got rid of this game I got WaW which ould have been the best CoD if the SMG”s were less powerfull and no marthadom or 2x frag on CoD4 it was 3x times frag mathadom and the power of the gernades with the m16 which is almost always a one burst without stoping power at any range and stoping power should be gone if theres no jauggernaunt if should just go by the wepon damage its self I could not give up MW2 but then I said fuck it and sold it and got WaW I cant play Battel Field with the controles but MW2 was a waste of money and the worst CoD ever for multiplayer part from CoD classic which is a pure waste of money and I downloaded both maps for MW2 which all maps have boosting spots camping spots and more and the glitches in MW2 is fucked up I fell like WaW has better spawns but on CoD4 they were prety bad people spawn in front of you on CoD4 and scince I play CoD4 again I just pristiged again for 2nd time but everything you said in this was all real and bet Black Ops might have a coupel of hacks cause of the new MW2 comunity which ruined CoD alltogher and think there good cause they hacked to 10th pristged bet if they went on CoD4 they would be saying it shit and to hard cause it took some skill or even better WaW which had really guns had recoil and took some bullets to kill part from the SMG”s which the MP40 is a one shot head shot fucking gay the SMG”s Ruined WaW Tryarch should have put out a patch for it but I reall think Black Ops will be good if they balence it and get rid of the care package which is still in Blak Ops for some reson.

Like IW has tried slightly to change the whole boosting situation by being able to ban but they just join a different mode then back out as the host joi9ns a FFA. ( i know this bcuz my brother boosts all the time)
i also remember in cod4 if u saw a sniper in cod 4 u had a chance but now he can just pull out his trusty raficca/m16 pistol(seriously it is just as good as the m16) and spam u to your death

The worst thing though is the un-punished free for all hacking in the game, especially in the neutered PC version, and no kick feature just to add salt to the wound.
i thought my friends and i were the only ones the butt of all of our jokes is cod played call of duty since cod 2 i played it for a very long time with all of my friends and then cod4 came out that was probably the best game ever made and i got to 54, fifth prestige and then modern warfare 2 came out and it was the biggest piece of shit i have ever played i got to third prestige and pretended to like it because cod4 was so amazing but i gave up when i realized that all the assault rifles are not fair the chopper gunner spawn rapes the enemy team and wins the game the maps are all bullshit and i was missing cod4 more and more, plus killstreaks are the only way that u can have fun in the game i have now lost all respect for infinity ward and cod i am done with them they actually ruined competitive multiplayer for me bc2 is infinitely better than mw2 and fallout 3 is now my favorite game infinity ward has the worst community and now there fans are 8 year old boys because there mommys wont let them buy games with blood in it oh and we have all found out that nukes are the dumbest thing ever made in a game u can get one as soon as u get a chopper gunner and end the game when everybody else is trying to have fun
Remember the only way these guys listen is if you speak with your wallet. If you hate MW2 then don’t buy black ops. Otherwise you are just letting them know that its ok to keep making bad games. Speak up with your money and don’t give Activision your $$. Buy something else.
I find it that it’s way too easy to die, before it was “I got hit i took cover i MAY kill the guy that shot at me” now it’s like ” I found u 3 shots die” specially with guns like the FAMAS it’s dumb. I also find that killstreaks play way too much influence on the game. I didn’t really like the perks either a close range combat became more like who can commando first(or just knife it’s also pretty fake in my opinion in the other game u had to be actually close to the guy to knife him). I also don’t like heartbeat sensors they’re stupid and promote camping i pray if i ever found a heartbeat sensor guy NOT camping. I used to love to run and gun but now i just place a claymore and “Snipe” with my TAR with silencer (also one of the reason that i don’t like sniping it’s not a one shot kill from anywhere and u can get killed by an AR from anywhere thus eliminating the advantage that it had over the AR). BUT since i play on the ps3 all u find on waw are mp40’s thus i can’t say i’m going back.
Never going to buy black ops after playing this horrible game. Too bad they just went from an automatic sale every time to me NEVER buying another COD game. You realise this game cost $105, $60 for the game plus 15 bucks for each map pack. Probably 20 bucks for maps on black ops. I am getting Force Unleashed 2 same time this game comes out so no COD for me. I will keep playing MW2 hopefully all the styles i hate in this game will go away when black ops comes out.
This game was good at first, but when people started to fucking mod their levels, i just fucking quit. Fuck this game. IW, you just screwed up. The only way you are making a profit off this game is because little kids and older men bought this. Hopefully COD 7 wont be bad compared to this piece of shit and that “little kids”, and “older men” wont mod the shit out of it.
I could not agree anymore than you. Modern warfare 2 sucks. You literally hit every point i hated about the game. I had a 3.44 kd in it and felt bad b/c i got it from counter-camping with cheap assault rifles like the m4 scar-h and acr. I sold that nooby piece of garbage for 40$ to gamestop and i am so glad. I now play cod4 and i am having a ball because people have respect and dont CAMP.i have a feeling black ops will blow just like mw2 because all they care about is money not how fun the game is for respectable players. infinity ward can go to hell.

I’ve played my last of game of MW2 multiplayer. All people do is camp, noob toob and glitch. Look the the top kill scores and you will see people who openly mod and IW sits there and promotes this bullshit by doing nothing. Bottom line is the multiplayer is not fun. Fun is when the a game is fair and balanced. There are no tiers. So an 8th level prestige can step on your throat and spawn rape you with an AC130 or Chopper Gunner without compunction. That’s not my idea of fun. You have people who treat this game like it’s a fucking religion who play only this game alone. Making it virtually inaccessible to new gamers. I am selling this shit game tommorow. Fuck you Infinity Ward.

Hearbeat sensor faggots really? Shooting someone from 500 feet away with shotguns really? They really Fucked this game up man!!! Why are the maps on this one so dam big? It just gives a reason for all the campers to make the game slow and boring!!! They should have just used some of the maps from Cod4 and it would have been more fun! Im sorry but this game has just officially hit rock bottom. i would rather jump off a bridge than play MW2. number 1 campters number 2 guns being over powered and 3 kill streaks….need i go on lag, the perks are retarded and the spawn i s rediculus, seriously there are no more lines of heres my team theres your its they can come from anywhere so i have to camp in order to deal with the retarded spawn but its ok i can shoot at this guy a full clip before he turns and shoots me once and i die. watch the kill cams he said i did…and it was rediculus it shows me not even firing and just standing looking at the guy im a 10th perstiage on cod4 and a lvl 47 first perstiage on MW2…i am no longer able to run free like i did in cod4 im reduced to sitting in corners hoping someone runs past me. thank you for your time…

I hate the multiplayer on MW2. The campaign is as great as ever but everything else can go to hell. I agree with pretty much everything ur saying but u failed to mention the glitches that MW2 has now. It has almost as much glitches as COD World at War did when it was first released.You can now succesfully hide in a pipe in the map “RUST”. I had igh hopes 4 this game and for 1/2 the day I thought it was a great game but then I ran into campers, the bull$hit killstreak rewards, and the overpowered guns. I hav a 1.98 K/D ratio on the game [the highest of all my friends] and I still haate this game. I am currrently playing COD4 and only play MW2 if my friends r playing it. All of my friends love the game [although they do admit there r flaws with the game] and will not stop playing it. I only play COD4 and some other random games. I agree. With some aspects but some Assault Rifles that are overpowered also have downsides. A perfect example for this is the Scar-H which doesn’t have a lot of ammo. The M16 has been slightly downgraded (although it is still overpowered) you can only get a 1-HIT-KO up from the belt. Also the F2000 which is powerful has a whole shit load of recoil. The Famas which is also a Burst-Fire Gun takes 2 hits usually unless if it’s a head shot. The M4A1 is just overpowered no loop holes WAY overpowered. The same case with the Tar it’s a 2-3 hit bullet kill and it has a lot of ammo. The FAL is like the G3 almost exactly like it (correct me if i’m wrong) so i have no issues with it. The ACR also is overpowered and it’s apparently the *coolest gun* according to players which is bascally means overused. Now i won’t discuss that gun that you unlock at lvl 70…it’s disgraceful….. Now the kill streaks 2 words… Care package and Emergency care package (3 words). I hate those i was just hopping for ammo NOT KILLSTREAKS!!!!!!!!
